Hamilton Boys' High started their Super 8 campaign in the best fashion last week, thrashing New Plymouth Boys' High 53-15.

The reigning Super 8 champions played the game at pace and moved the ball quickly around the field, outscoring the visiting New Plymouth side nine tries to two.

Boys' High scored five tries in the first half, including the opener after just 40 seconds, and had wrapped up the bonus point after 25 minutes.

The first-half try scorers were flanker Kane Jacobson, prop Joe Walsh, No8 Chris Lolohea, halfback Ben Finau and centre Regan Ware.

Boys' High did not let up in the second half, scoring another four tries with their forwards in complete control providing quick phase ball to give their backline an easy ride.

Jacobson got a second try, while locks Alex Suttie and Luke Waqanilotuvou and wing Luke Masirewa all crossed the line to complete the rout.

New Plymouth played positively throughout the game and were rewarded with two late consolation tries.

St Peter's remain unbeaten at the top of the first division table in Waikato Secondary School 1st XV rugby after beating St John's 17-15 in a frantic finish last Thursday.

The evenly contested match at St Peter's School sparked into life in the final quarter, as momentum swung back and forth with the lead changing hands six times throughout the game.

St John's had the better start to the game, playing with lots of energy and enjoying long periods on attack, and they got the only try of the first half when second five Niko Malo scored from an individual effort.

St Peter's hit the front right on halftime after first five Wharenui Hawera kicked his second penalty.

St John's again looked threatening early in the second half and a penalty put them in front. However St Peter's hit the lead once more after Hawera struck two more penalties.

Then midway through the second half Malo made another incisive break, running 50 metres before offloading to set up St John's second try, and the intensity of the match suddenly lifted.

With just five minutes left St Peter's summoned one last attacking raid and charged into St John's territory with hooker Sam Rea crossing the line for the winning try.

In the other Thursday first division game Cambridge were too strong for Tokoroa, running in five tries to one in a comfortable 32-7 win.

The Cambridge forward pack, led by loose forward trio Mitch Jacobson, Isaac van der Valk and Drew Bootten, were impressive and dominated set pieces and rucks. In the backs centre Josh Gascoigne ran strongly and scored two tries, while halfback Brogan Bayliss had another good game.

St Paul's had their annual quadrangular tournament over the long weekend, meaning their first division match with Hamilton Boys' High 3rd XV was postponed.

Division 2: Morrinsville 19 Te Awamutu 5, Hillcrest 15 Fraser High 15, Matamata 23 Hamilton Boys' High 4th XV 3.
