Brief summary of first half:
The first half started slow with Waikato playing for territory with a strong wind at their backs and Counties Manukau endeavouring to keep the ball in hand.
At the 18 minute mark Waikato secured a turnover at the ruck from Blake Boli. The ball was moved wide from Te Raina Richards-Coxhead to Isaac Te Tamaki on the right wing who showed good pace and determination to score in the corner.
Four minutes later Harrison Levien secured the ball at a ruck and scooted blind side. The pass to Aaron Crow put the left winger into space and a nice in and out swerve left the Counties Manukau defender stranded and the try was scored in the corner.
From the kick off Waikato were unable to secure the ball and Counties Manukau swung onto attack. Waikato managed to scramble on defence although the clearing kick was charged down. Counties Manukau secured possession and after a few pick and go’s they crossed the line to score.
Just before halftime Waikato secured yet another turnover at the ruck, by Blake Boli, and Counties were penalised for going off their feet at the ruck. Bryn Gatland kicked the penalty.
Halftime Score: Waikato: 13 Counties Manukau: 5
Brief summary of second half:
Counties Manukau, with the wind behind their backs, started strongly in the second half with a number of raids on the Waikato line. Waikato managed to hold them out for 13 minutes until the pressure finally told and after a number of penalties Counties Manukau finally chose to take a shot at goal, which was converted.
From the restart Waikato finally got their hands on the ball and were able to build some phases and Counties Manukau were caught off side in the back line, penalty to Waikato. Unfortunately the shot at goal drifted wide.
20 minutes into the second half and Waikato were dominating territory when Counties Manukau made a clearing kick from their own goal line up towards half way. This was cleaned up by Isaac Te Tamaki, who then fed the ball to Aaron Crow to sprint 50m to score in the corner.
From the restart Waikato again built a number of phases and pressure on Counties Manukau, resulting in a penalty. Bryn Gatland kicked in to the corner for a lineout. From the ensuing lineout Ben Greene broke from the lineout and made a charging run towards the line. Quick ruck ball to a charging Tallis Karaitiana resulted in a try under the posts. Try converted by Bryn Gatland.
Play then ebbed and flowed until Counties set up camp in the Waikato 22 and peppered the Waikato Try line with attack after attack. Constant infringements resulting in a number of penalties and quick taps ended with a converted try to Counties Manukau.
Fulltime Score: Waikato 25 Counties Manukau 15
