Hautapu recovered from a slow start to beat Fraser Tech 24-22 in round seven of Waikato premier division club rugby.
Despite being outscored four tries to three and trailing for most of the match, Hautapu showed good character to stay in the game and were rewarded with their fourth win of the season.
The first 10 minutes belonged to Fraser Tech as they quickly jumped out to a 12 point lead.
A quick tap from a penalty resulted in the opening try after seven minutes. Then a Hautapu sin binning was followed almost immediately by Fraser Tech’s second try.
Hautapu then settled into the match and were soon on the scoreboard with a penalty from Tom Casey.
The pressure began to mount on Fraser Tech as Hautapu made all the play and created good opportunities but were unable to finish.
Finally, in the 37th minute, they crossed the Fraser Tech line after a charge down led to a Sam van der Valk try.
However Fraser Tech showed just how dangerous they can be with ball in hand as they marched down the field to score right on half time.
The converted try made it 17-10 to Fraser Tech at half time.
Hautapu continued to apply pressure in the second half and turned down shots at goal as they looked for the try to tie the game up.
Then, cruelly for Hautapu, Fraser Tech scored a breakout try from their own 22 against the run of play to extend their lead and secure a four try bonus point.
Hautapu kept their heads up and were finally rewarded with a try in the 63rd minute, as an overlap down the left wing put Ruamai Erueti over to score.
The momentum was back with Hautapu again and with just nine minutes remaining they scored from a quick tap. The conversion was successful and Hautapu hit the lead for the first time in the match.
A tense last 10 minutes saw Fraser Tech create some chances but they lacked the finishing touch and Hautapu hung on for the win.
