Waikato started this sudden death Semi Final with good intensity – taking the game to their much bigger opposition in the first 5 minutes. This pressure resulted in a try to 2nd 5/8 Hadleigh May from a good move from a Scrum. Wharenui Hawera converted. Waikato up 7-0. However BOP came storming back into the match after finally getting their hands on the ball. They dominated both possession and territory for the rest of the half scoring 3 tries in 12 minutes and creating opportunities to score several more. Waikato – to their credit - continued to scramble in defence and managed to keep the deficit to only 19-7 at halftime.

Halftime Score:  Waikato 7      BOP 19

As the rain started to fall, an inspired halftime talk by Coaches Sean Botherway and Sam Nonoa had the desired effect – as the Waikato boys came out in the second half with a steely determination and intensity. They dominated the entire half and managed to keep their opposition scoreless for the entire second spell whilst scoring 2 tries of their own. Hooker Cameron Moorby scored after 10 minutes, after a good lineout drive from the forwards. And after 30 minutes, Fullback Joseph Webber scored wide out on the left hand side – after sustained pressure. A fine conversion by Wharenui Hawera drew the scores level at 19 apiece. A late, long range penalty attempt from BOP was unsuccessful – which handed the victory to Waikato – on account of being first try scorer.

Fulltime Score: Waikato 19     BOP 19 (Waikato win on account of scoring the first try.)
