The home team had the perfect setting for a big win over Northland, playing in picturesque surroundings and coming off two very good wins.
Unfortunately Northland came prepared to take home a win and started the game strongly, constantly unsettling the home side and contesting in all facets of the play , not allowing the Waikato U20 to find their rhythm from previous weeks.
Only down 7 - 3 at half time the home side started the second half with more purpose and direction. The Waikato U20 pack began to go forward and steadied its set piece which provided better ball for the backline to attack with. The second half saw the home team ware down their opposition and the backs were able to break the advantage line resulting in a further four tries.
Though this game lacked the same level of skill and accuracy of previous games the home team still displayed a hard nose approach to win and showed what it is capable of when they put their mind to the task in hand.
Northland certainly tested the home side and gave a good account of themselves ensuring that the home side had to work hard if they wanted the win. Next week the Waikato U20 finish their Northern Regions campaign against Auckland at Pakuranga Rugby grounds in Auckland.
