1921 - 1929

1921

  • Waikato Rugby Union is formed after lengthy negotiations between sub-unions.
  • The inaugural representative side of the new union draws its first match away to Taranaki, 15-all.
  • The first win comes in the third match - a 6-0 victory over Manawatu.
  • The first home match is a 28-11 loss to New South Wales at Claudelands Showgrounds.
  • There is also a brave effort against the mighty Springboks at Claudelands, losing 6-0.

1925

  • Rugby Park is opened with a new 60 foot long stand.

1928

  • New colours of red, yellow and black are adopted. They are a combination of the club jerseys of Hamilton (gold and black) and Old Boys (red and black), and replace the previous black and white, blue and white colours.

1929

  • Jack Tuck becomes Waikato's first All Black - a utility back who played in tests against Australia in Australia.
